Re: CampmobileCraig
I have a 65 TEC Campmobile. The cabinets are made out of Formica. Earlier ones were made out of wood. There are some sales material on the Samba we got from the owner of Travel Equipment. Here is a letter we got from owner of Travel Equipment.
When we had a contract with VW of America, it was called a "Campmobile."
The first two years or so, the cabinets and paneling were solid
birch. In '
63 or '64, we started using ½" plywood with a Westinhouse countertop
type
laminate on both sides.
For the first number of years, all our production was sold through VW of
America and our Fords through the Ford Motor Company. We discontinued
our VW
conversions in the late 70s. Actually, I didn't start the business. My
father did in El Paso, Texas. I joined him shortly after. My father
ended
his participation in '64 when we became a division of the Travel
Equipment
Corp. in Elkhart, Indiana.
Sorry, but all of the old parts, drawings, etc., faded away decades
ago. I
do have several old pieces of literature, which I'm sending.

Re: CampmobileCraig
I "googled" the company and came up with a current listing for the treasurer in Goshen Indiana. President in Elkhart. I'm going to Elkhart, Indiana from May 4th to the 6th. It would be kind of cool to get a pic of the old location. Any ideas on where it was located? I'll grab a pic for you guys if you figure out the location.
address for TEC original location
If this is posting winds up being excess clutter or incorrect to your project thread I apologize in advance. Feel free to move and/or delete it as the Mods see fit.
I Google searched "Travel Equipment Corp." and saw scanned old issues of Popular Mechanics, Kiplingers and others in Google books.
This one has a Gardena, CA branch plant address in addition to an IN P.O. Box with just a short VW mention:
http://books.google.com/books?id=JQAEAA ... rp&f=false
This one has an IN address instead of just a P.O. Box but mainly Dodge conversion photos:
http://books.google.com/books?id=kCEDAA ... rp&f=false
406 Jay Dee Rd, Elkhart, IN
Google maps shows it as a long warehouse type building, now home to some company called Kingman Dedicated Services.
Here's a streetview link:

Re: CampmobileCraig
Ron - From my understanding , the Travel Equipment Corp VW early campers were named " Campmobiles" then changed to Sportsmobiles , but mine is a 64 and I belive they called it a Campmobile then.
Probably the same thing?
