That is a 17mm allen for the drain and fill plugs. What size was the hammer you used to get a 19mm to work?

19mm to remove top and bottom rgb bolts.If you're not lazy like me, remove the tire so you don't make a mess.

I have no idea, but some po must have been in a 'swappin' move. They were threaded bolts top and bottom on both sides. Now that I'm thinking about it, they could have been 17mm. Perhaps I'm confused over the two 19mm tranny drain plugs. What's up with two drain plugs?

I'll have to go back out tonight and check the bolt sixe and get you a picture.

Hopefully they are not bolts because bolts have straight threads which might leak. They should be pipe plugs which have a tapered thead for proper sealing. Maybe they are pipe plugs with a 19MM hex head. Need to see a picture.

Well I'm surprised. They are both, (top and bottom), 19mm bolts. What's up with that? They are the same as the two 19mm drain plugs. None of them leak. Here's a view of one of them...

I even double checked the wrench...

I bet they are (NPT) pipe thread plugs... The hex head is technically 3/4" not 19mm.

Or the metric equivilant of Americcan Standard (NPT)

If it makes any difference, the top and bottom rgb "bolts" were exactly the same as the two tranny drain plugs.

BTW, why does a split case tranny have two drain plugs anyway?

These bolts were not normal "bolts". IIRC, they seemed to have a magnet in them, (if that's possible). The fill plug was hollow on the inside. Dale and I were starring at that for quite a while.

Maybe I just have a 'Barney Rubble' transaxle.

Split case transmissions used the 19mm bolt or hex head plugs on the trannys and redux boxes.

When VW went to the tunnel trans in `60 they started using the 17mm allen head bolt plugs like toolbox ted speaks of. Both styles have pipe threads and the drain plugs in the tranny will have magnets in them to catch gear shavings etc. and none of the others will have the magnets.

So what you have sounds 100% correct Sean.
