Like you, I love the 6.70's. I guess I just wanted a little false security that radials seem to bring. I really kept it 6 volt 'cause I was trying to keep it fairly original. Nothing that a stock nazi couldn't easily fix down the road! I figure there aren't a whole lot of these left and it would have been a shame to 'frankenstien' it just for some extra creature comforts. I'm going to find a bay window as my next project for that!

I've never driven a 36HP small nut tranny, so I don't really know what I'm in for. I'm a slow driver anyway. I'll probably be running with Ken and Reg.

One thing for sure, I know I won't be keeping up with Berea Bob!

About the dual mstr cyl. I've never done this conversion but how about using one of these 73 up res. single inlet. use a piece of brake hose and a LEAKOIL FUNNEL to fill,then plug the hose. or this set up from dual mstr bug. cheap resevior,113 611 301,(20.00)
angle inlet pipes 113 611 153,and grommets 211 611 817a There are some other options with the 73 up res. such as using a second res. 68-72 which mnts behind the seat,has a single outlet which feeds the inlet on the late res. or the fill res from 73 up,again with a single outelt,mnts under seat and fills late dual res on mstr cyl.

Well Ken, you're like me. I guess we shouldn't take too many chanes. I've been talking to Dale about it at Dale's VW. Six volts won't kill you, but a suicide cylinder can!

Dale's going to help me with the brakes, which is great 'cause he has two lifts. I still have an original one cylinder in my beetle, but I make sure the e-brake is in top notch shape and the bug is pretty light and is really pretty easy to stop using the e-brake. I don't know how that approach will fare with a fully loaded split bus, so I think I'm better off with a dual. Besides the look of that split bus e-brake scares the heck out of me. It's like John Wayne pulling up on a team of horses! I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

Dale may have a rabbit resevoir it says you can use. It probably won't line up with the hole in the floor though, so I may have to bite the bullet. WW sells a metal (German) line replacement kit for the 55-63 brakes at $52.00, http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/Detai ... 211698001B , but I'm not sure what other lines or connections I'll need down below with the extra circuit.

Why spend a bunch of cash to install the incorrect part? Ronnie at Type2parts.com has German 67 only masters for $225 and has used reseviors too.

Don't Believe that "California Quality" crap. It's the same as "Ohio/Michigan Quality" only they have more busses.

As for "rookie" - There is no such thing as a perfect restoration. Besides, very few of us have the guts to tackle a project like yours with no formal training, let alone have it turn out so well. You should be proud.

From reading the various threads on VW related sites, most seem to reference the rabbit or volvo resevoirs as the, (sometimes only), option. I'm not schooled enough to know why. Are the others are too tall to fit under the split floor? I have no idea, I'm just not certain why some of the options, like Bill referenced, are not mentioned more often. I'll grab one of those that Bill suggests from Dale's and see if they will physically fit. Seems like they should work.

Ted may also be on to something. I've not really considered the '67 one year only option becase I've always heard they are so exspensive and no one ever seems to have them. For example, none currently at Euclid Foreign. I've never bought from Ronnie, (Splitpile), but I hear nothing but good things about him.

I'd have to figure out a resevoir for the '67. Also, I'm assuming the pushrod is going to be a different size. Do I still need a spacer if I can't find a correct pushrod? Probably. If I can source the parts, the '67 unit may not be any more exspenive than buying all the "pieces parts" in the CIP1 catalogue.

While we're looking at that, I've got a few Q's for you split experts...

1). Do I need one of these for my gas pedal return?

If you think it still looks bad, you should have seen how bad this pedal looked before I started cleaning it.



2). I have everything else below fully attached arm ready to go. I also have the little spring unit. Do I just need some kind of circlip? To attach the metal arm to the pedal? Where the indentation is on the arm? Anyone know the size? WW doesn't show it.



Putting a bus back together when you've never taken one apart is tough. The PO didn't do me any favors. He marked some stuff, but that stuff was obvious. Other stuff he just marked "cab interior" or other cryptic references like that. Usually it's just a box of assorted screws, bolts and various nick-nacks. Lovely.

What are these? The bottom one's look the stricker plates, but the top ones????

You can make a pushrod out of a bolt in about 10 minutes with a hacksaw and bench grinder or turn one on a lathe and be uber correct. Just need to make sure you have the 3mm clearance between the rod and mc piston.

Never had a master cylinder go out but I had a rusty rear brakeline rupture once on a single MC bus. Of course I lost the brakes completely and had to use the e-brake to stop. Had it been a dual MC at least I would have had front brakes.
