1974 Transporter
Re: 1974 Transporter
Super cool. Good luck with the project. You certainly have the space to do it. Keep us posted on the progress.
Re: 1974 Transporter
Welcome Josh! Glad you found the site and joined up. Everyone here is very friendly so we hope to see and meet you in person at some events.
Nice to see another '74. I had a '74 that another club member (also named Josh) got from me and he traded it to still another club member who then traded it to yet another club member! So I guess the lesson is "Hold onto your '74!"
And that parts bus of yours looks better than some of our regular buses!

Re: 1974 Transporter
Welcome! That 74 is coming along nicely! Definitely a lot faster than a few of my vehicles...

Re: 1974 Transporter
Hey Josh. Great job. So we can all learn can you upload more pics and more detail on how you had the bus blasted. It's an awesoe job you're doing and we all can learn. What welder do you use and what filler are you using?
Re: 1974 Transporter
No Problem. I had a local guy who blasts heavy equipment do the blasting. I also had him prime it right away to keep it from rusting. It was a little costly due to using a lot of sand because he had to keep his distance to avoid warping of the sheet metal. $1,800.00 later I had a clean holy van
I cut out pretty much all of the bottom panels around the whole van except for the front. Replace all of the rocker panels, replaced the front floor pan, front wheel arches, cut out the passenger seat tub and replaced it with the one from my 1973 parts van.
I used a Millermatic 212 welder to weld the rocker panels, floorpan, and front wheel arches.
The door skins and rear panels were glued on. That made it a lot easier when we did the mud work. I figured it took 4.5 gal of Dura Glass to fill out the panels. They were finished off with Feather Rite filler. Then we primed and wet sanded the whole van.

Awesome job! That's an amazing amount of work! I guess if you're going to do it you may as well be thorough! And you are being thorough!!
When you say the door skins and rear panels were "glued on", is that to keep them in place for welding? Or is that a substitute for welding? Just curious on how that works. What is the glue that is used? Can it be applied to painted/primed surfaces? or just bare metal?
