I wasn't there yesterday, and I can't say this is the source, but every time I was under that motor I noticed how your pushrod seals needed, should we say, a "little attention". Watch your oil level and address it when you get back from Dixie bus. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewto ... tube+seals

Push rod tube seals and rocker cover gaskets. Even if you get the good Viton PR seals and decent VC gaskets it will be less than a sixer.

Thanks for the input everyone! So with it being as it is, ya think I can safely do a 200 mile roundtrip, as long as I keep an eye on the oil level?
Any chance that the oil leaking onto the exhaust could ignite?

Why not? It's not like you worried about maintenance before!

I'm sure you'll be fine! :D Besides, you don't want to be like me and show up in a Ford Ranger!

You may have some leaking push rod tubes, a few of them were rusted but good, paper thin in some spots, I did my best to avoid touching them whilst working on the exhaust (and any other part of your bus I didn't want to fix) mechanically your bus is OK, but it's ready for a bit more R & R (repair & replacement) and type 4 engine push rod tubes & seals are something a novice bus tinkerer could handle themselves (read: not challenging enough for me) you could do it in a weekend! just get everything together beforehand:

a) 8 new push rod tubes
b) new push rod tube seals
c) 2 good used or new valve covers
d) valve cover gaskets
e) new or used valve cover bails if necessary

And you could document the procedure for other leakoiler's (just what you need another reason to post something) get all the parts then ask the club how to procede, I sure numerous members will chime in with proper instructions....

Thanks for the list of parts I need Chuck! I will be driving the bus to Oktoberfest as-is since it is fairly close to my house. After Labor Day I will address the tubes. If anyone has a line on the parts that are needed please let me know.

You can probably find stuff other places, but that's what popped up when I played on the internet for a bit when taking a break from learning.

Airhead is cheaper in the long run. Bus Depot is hosing you on some of the parts. Bet Euclid has them too without shipping.

Excellent point Ted. I totally forgot about Airhead's reasonable rates!
