Whilst you have the motor out, remove & inspect the water pump area of the engine block, I've had cooling issues with Vanagons due to damage to the block at the water pump impeller location (ie: previously bad water pump bearing causing the shaft/impeller to tilt and machine a circular groove into the block face), sometimes they work ok, and other times the damage will make it impossible to circulate coolant properly, if there is any damage fix it with Devcon titanium putty (industrial strength JB weld) also great for repairing pitted cylinder heads at the cooling jacket gasket area, and don't forget to replace the water pump....

Woah randy came over and helped me put the motor back in yesterday...it starts so that's a good sign....still needs coolant.
