But ask Craig how that's working out for him first.....

Starting to develop a loud bearing-like whine upon cold starts. The noise hangs around for a minute or two until things warm up and I drove down the street. Noise is constant even with the clutch in or out. Am i looking a bad trans bearing or a gland nut bearing? Any ideas friends?

I've had the same noises for many years on multiple buses (all new parts from several different sources) and no one has ever given me an answer of how to correct it....so I ignore it and haven't had a failure yet. I know, not the answer you're looking for. When you do find it, let me in on the secret because it is annoying.

I blame the TO bearing.

I like this line of thinking. Thanks!

I had a bearing like whine for a couple of years in my 76. I was putting several thousand miles a year on it dragging a trailer all over the East. I found out what it was half way across Pennsylvania on I80, about where the fold on the atlas is (if your old enough to know what an Atlas is). First, I lost 4th gear. Then 3rd. After a tow home and taking the trans, along with another used one I had to get rebuilt, rebuilder informed me that it was main shaft bearing failer that caused the eventual total trashing of my trans. Discovered that many trans rebuilders judge this bearing to be good, and don't replace it.

I had a constant whine in 4th gear of the 66 Westy when I first got it. Art Brow replaced the main shaft bearings and that cured the problem.
