The VW Vineyard

Post by blue71 »

In short: I have a 70 westy that has 71 brake parts and other oddities. The driveline is being donated to Emily the velvet green 68 westy, while the interior is going to the 68 westy built in 67. This white relic won't see the road again for a few reasons, and I'm loathe to cut it up and scrap it. I talked with my dad about what to do with it and he had a plan: bar/guest house in the vineyard. This has morphed even more and the other westies may be parked around the vineyard to be quaint places to rent (albeit no driving allowed.)

The extreme cold from this winter caused an estimated $4 million dollars in damage to the Ohio wine industry.

The 4/15 & 4/28 articles are the prevalent and recent ones.

Since my dad doesn't sell to other wineries he only really cares if the vines survived. If they don't produce grapes he doesn't mind, just as long as they can make leaves and grow some this year he will be happy.

Now that it's gotten warmer he used the workhorse ZR2 to pull the white relic up the hill and position it exactly where my mom wants it to be in the yard. For those of you that came out last year that means it's above the vineyard on the hill where the one picnic table was located.

He's been gutting and cleaning it, with the removed parts being set aside to be installed in the blue 68 westy. His plans include running power to it and making the back section into a bar area that can be converted into a bed. It'll be painted inside and out, with some holes patched, etc.

Here are some photos I've been sent:

There were some large holes in the front floor and he doesn't like to weld. So he screwed in some sheet metal and will be doing some seam sealing.

We procured this lovely gem from Aaron for the princely sum of ten dimes because we didn't have a broken lawnmower or a goat. This makes the second bug front clip hauled around in that truck.

It will probably become a chair somewhat akin to this one. A cooler may be under the seat part. However, it's ultimate fate is in my mom's hands. We also have a sunroof clip from a 74 super and some bug doors that may wind up being used for a sign.

The weather has halted most progress on this project. Luckily most of the vines survived the winter. The white westy is gutted and awaiting some repairs, then paint, followed by the new interior. A junk, to me, T3 rear decklid got painted up as a sign.

My dad has had a little bit of time to prep the body and do a little bit of painting. He is also designing the interior to be installed the next time he has spare time. The nose is too messed up from the spare tire so he'll probably hang one back on it or make something else to put there.

The vineyard is expanding again. I can't remember the exact number, but a hundred or so more vines. Some of them are 20 years old, if not older.

The bar bus will be getting the white painted sometime soon I believe.

A few Easter eggs were hidden near it and in the vineyard for my sister's kids.
