1974 Double Cab Project

Post by Rob »

This is my new project. It is a 1974 Double Cab originally delivered to Panama. It came with the dusty roads package, a beefed up rear suspension and an air cleaner that breathes through the frame rails via a vent at the back of the cab. 1600 cc dual port. From what I have learned it also spent some time in Nicarauga and Mexico before being brought over into Texas. My father and I purchased it from a man in Georgia.

My initial plans are to get it tuned up, replace the exhaust and address the nightmare of an electrical system. Along the way sprucing up the interior a bit.

I am new to the forum and have not figured out how to post more than one photo at a time.

First project is to replace the exhaust. I've never seen an exhaust like this and thought maybe it was some special Central American VW Part. When I saw that it was welded to the heater boxes it was clear that this was no factory exhaust. Appears to be cobbled together from several mufflers including parts of an actual VW one. I am going to replace it with a stock exhaust and J-tubes until I can locate some good heater boxes. Not planning to drive this during the winter anyway.

Yes, nice find, and welcome aboard. Looks like you have a nice save green westy and a single cab also. Hopefully we get to see one of them at an event soon.

Any questions just ask, this is a really helpful bunch here.

Sarcasm is just one of the many services I offer.

I like my water filtered through a bed of grains, cleansed by yeast, and preserved with hops.

Carefully remove the heatexchangers. I bet if you pull off the kustom exhaust and clean up the pipes the exchangers are usable.
