With the huge drop in oil temps I saw after installing a deep sump in Bus 1, obviously Bus 2 had to get it too.
P2110007.JPG
This is the exact same Empi sump I put on Bus 1 which fit without modification, but not in Bus 2. Some grinding had to be done to clear the case properly.

I ran it on the high step of the cam for an hour to see big differences between the bottom of the case and the bottom of the sump, like 70-80°F. Even though this bus has no temp gauge I'm sure it will be much happier on the highway with a bigger sump.

I've been switching all of my ACVW to Mobil 1 0W-40, it has plenty of phosphorous and zinc in it to keep the lifters happy. And it says "for Volkswagens" right on the front so it must be the right stuff!

If you ask 100 guys what to seal a case or sump with you'll get a hundred answers, probably all good. I've been using Curil T with good luck on my last few engines. The best part- neither sump leaks on either bus!

Yes, better here and now than on KI next week. Pretty much the same drill replacing it. I noticed the clutch cable Bowden tube didn't seat right away in the picture- this explains the big "bang" the first time I pushed on the clutch. I thought something was going wrong in the bellhousing....

Remember "Musical Chairs" when you were a kid? I'm doing Musical Motors. The 2180 from the Ghia went into Bus 1, the 1904 from Bus 1 went into Bus 2. The 1600 CWC goes from B2 to the shelf. I didn't take a lot of pictures to document the process but it went smoothly. Out with the 1600:

In with the 1904:
P4070007.JPG
The last time I tried to beat the clock, on page 14 I hustled and did it in 1:15 with the bumper on. I thought I'd take my time and to make it easier I pulled the bumper. Even with switching the clutch, modifying the throttle tube and R&Ring the bumper it still only took 1:40, much quicker than I though it would be. That was Monday, I took it for a long ride then and yesterday too. I saw an old T3 fastback on Rt 82 in Grafton driving in it yesterday.

One of my buddies stopped by with refreshments to inspect my work.

It pulls really nice with the 1904 like you'd expect. It has a '64 tranny in it which is a one-year-only gear ratio, 4:12 R&P and 1.26 RGB which is borderline too tall for a stock engine, that's why they went to a 4.37 in '65. There's a loooonnnnggg hill on the turnpike WB coming back from Jim's that it used to struggle on over the valley near Peninsula. I bet it won't struggle there anymore. In a regular car you don't even notice that hill but in a split bus loaded with core motors you do.

PS Jim's swap is cancelled next week, like that's a surprise. :|

The tranny is a bit tired in Bus 2 and it probably deserves a new one. It actually works pretty well but leaks from the gearcase. I dug through my junk cores to find a suitable unit with the right R&P, I don't even remember where this one came from, probably a swap meet. I popped the side cover to verify ratio, it's 33/8 which is what I want, 4.125. Several others were 35/8 which is 4.37, a good city gear but really screams on the highway, and with the 1904 I should use the taller gear. I'm pretty sure it has a 4.12 in it right now and I definitely don't want to go lower.

I cleaned it up, changed the clutch arm from the bent one to the straight one, put a new nosecone on it and dropped it off at Jim's. He says he's crazy busy! Everyone is off work and wrenching on their Dubs.

I don't know what VW was thinking when they put that bent arm on for 10-15 years but it's a major PITA to get at the top left bell bolt.
WTF is with a liquid salt truck spraying on the turnpike? WTF!!!

Snow showers on April 15, 2020 in NE Ohio. ODOT District 12 out in front of it!

District 12 tries, but unlike the rest of us, they're at the mercy of our stupid weather reporters. We can ignore the doomsday overstated weather reports, but District 12 can't take that chance. Hence, you get the government issued liquid salt truck!

25 years ago as a prosecutor I had a case involving District 12. I asked them for a one page summary of an event for discovery and they sent me a 200 page printout!

It could have been another district if you were farther East, but to me they're all the same!

I used to do a LOT of training for ODOT at all of the districts before they centralized training in about 2008 and went to lowest bidder training companies. District 12 was one of the worst at maintaining their trucks, I was appalled at the condition of their fleet when I walked through the shop. I hope things have changed since then. I'm not sure where I shot the picture, it could have been either D12 or D4.

I hosed off the bus really well when I got back to the shop as I think I ran over some of the fresh liquid calcium. :(

I've been really busy at the shop but haven't posted much, just completed 70 hours of stuff on a '68 Vette but that doesn't belong here.

Jim's Custom finally got my tranny done so I picked it up at the show Saturday. It needed the normal stuff, a couple of synchros, 1st gear, bearings, etc. I'm splitting my time between Sean's motor and Bus 2 right now. I got Sean's long block done so I'm going to change my tranny now.

I sure wish I could snap my fingers and get those axles to jump over from the old trans to the new trans. These things are a royal PITA to change axles on, the whole RGB and everything has to be torn down. At least it's all fresh so it shouldn't need anything.
P7150010.JPG
Stay tuned. Maybe I'll trade this stupid thing for a Bay so I don't have to mess with RGBs anymore.
