Sean brought me a 1600 DP core to tear down and examine. Things didn't go so well....

The first red flag was the JB Weld gooped on the outside of the case.

Upon teardown it looks like they "tried" to seal up the big crack but missed, or maybe it spread after gluing.

The #1 main was a mess- not only was the dowel loose and the bearing rotating, but it had pounded out the saddle very badly and worn the thrust about an eighth inch! The groove I'm pointing to isn't supposed to be there.

The heads weren't much better- someone had cut the seats and faces way too much, the margin was gone on the valves and the seats (and guides) need replacing.

Not fixable, scrap. :| I think a new case and heads would be a good investment here.

I know most of you will be shocked by this, but even I knew that motor was crap when I brought it in. I was hoping the DP heads might be usable, but at best, only one is a possible core.

Yes, it will be an aluminum block and a 2280 cam as Bruce has recommended.

I do have a nice set of 85.5 P/C's and a nice set of SP heads done by RIS, but in a perfect world, I should go dual.

Given that I need to do the whole 12V conversion, that cost is tugging at my wallet so I may just run the SP heads unless a nice set of DP heads fall into my lap.

One last thing. I think I'm going 'The Rick Lang' and getting an alternator! :D

That case would be A1, near NOS condition according to GEX.

a smart one at that. I had to have a hinge welded back into place from the stress the original prop applies
