Thanks Bill. I know enough to follow your advice, but I couldn't find any 20-50w oil around here so I went with the STP 30W I've been sitting on. I'll probably order some 20-50w or figure out who sells it. I was in NAPA today and forgot to look, so maybe they sell it.

I decided to put a regulator on the fuel line. I'm not thrilled putting anything in-line in the engine compartment, but until I get a properly dispensing fuel pump, I'm using the regulator. The regulator came with 1/4", 5/16" or 3/8" connectors and obviously I opted for the 1/4". I wanted to use my 5MM fuel line, but 1/4" fit better on the nipple so I got 1/4" 30R7 line and used the better quality non-pinch clamps. I used permatex teflon to seal the threads, so we'll see. I looked around for the Holley regulator, but couldn't find one, so Mr. Gasket will have to do for now. OIl light is out, but I really haven't had time to take it on a hard run on the freeway, so the jury is still out.

I checked the valves today and the adjustment at 006 was good. Dwell is at 41 so that could use a slight adjustment. Haven't messed with the timing yet or the carb setting. That will have to wait until later in the week. At least I'm back to starting, going and stopping.

Good old STP

I hate crap in the engine compartment. What can go wrong?

Here's the 1/4" line I used.

30R7 is not ethanol safe, you want 30R9 or better.

Thanks for that info. I asked the guy at Auto Zone if it was ethanol safe and of course he athoritatively said "Sure!"

Last time I wanted to buy Castrol 20W50, Advance Auto Parts did not have it, but Walmart did. Go figure.

I ran that same pressure regulator in my Beetle for a while - no issues with it.

I wish it came with some mounting hardware so I could mount it on the fan shroud. Anywhere but hanging precariously above the distributor! I mean, what could go wrong?

I hate having anything extra in the engine compartment. I even hate having any braided or rubber fuel lines. The old 36er's had all metal lines with metal threaded connections. Eventually I'll sort out the fuel pump and see if I can eliminate the need for a regulator.

As inept as I am as a mechanic, I find timing to be a comforting, relaxing, calming and stress releasing diversion. I still need to switch the idiot light wires, but for now the oil light is out and I've got the right fuel pressure. The valves are good and the points are now pretty good at 46 and the full advance comes in at 28-30 degrees at 3400rpm's. I run a vacuum only distrubutor. They run nice with the 30/31 carb. It still needs a good freeway run to see where the oil pressure is at at high heat, but it won't matter as I'll soon migrate to a 1600 once Bruce can evalute my pieces/parts. Here's my dwell
