X2 on everything toolbox said! It needs to get torn down so you can get access to the diff housing area. Fix it right the first time.
Replace the failed snap ring too and inspect the input shaft at the snap ring location to be sure it's not damaged.

You should save a few bucks if you remove the axles and refurb the RGBs yourself. Is it a big nut? Here are a few I've done:

You'll need a HF puller kit, basic tools, and some way to get the big freeze plug out. I use a welder. It's a greasy messy job, get a good workbench, lots of newspapers and a solvent tub to clean parts. I'd take the center section to Jim's Custom.

I decided to pull the tranny and do it myself, you cant learn unless you try. try and find a 7mm stud, weddle ind has them 2.65 stud, 13$ shipping !! when I get the gasket set I will try to put the puzzle back together. thank you all for your input

There are 7 of them on the front of the transaxle. Nosecone studs are M7. You can steal one from and extra trans if you have one... or take it from the front of that trans. Six studs up there "will be fine"

You can get 3 feet of M7 threaded rod from McMaster for $12.

I put the engine back in and it would not idle and ran hot, par for the course, fix 1 thing break another. I pulled it and took it to bruce, where he found my left intake manifold boot was cracked. I got a new pair in akron today and all is well again !! thanks again bruce for all your help
