Nick's 1971 Westy

Post by blue71 »

I put this find in the post for Dan's camper search as well, figured to put it in here just to cover all the bases.

I am selling my 1972 VW "Westvalia Camper project" It is in very solid condition. Does not currently run and is partially dismantled, but she is complete. These things continue to rise in value and will be a great investment. If you are looking for a winter project this is it.

* Location: Fowlerville

MADE A DEPOSIT

Post by blue71 »

I went to look at it and found the following:

rockers are ok, need replaced, some small holes, bubbles, etc
in passenger wheelwell rear section, starting to rust/holes
windshield lip decent, some surface and bubbles
driver floor patched, not well
rear hatch glass has some bubbles around seal
rear driver side vent wing rotted hinge (Need a solid piece of glass for this)
driver side jalousy window no glass
needs heater pipe
some dents in rear lower quarters poorly repaired with filled
needs canvas
needs interior put back together
needs battery (sucks air so won't idle- bad gasket seating for intake?)

Some other dude was coming to look at it. SO, I called the folks, since their friends want a camper bus, and made a deposit.

Could the ever helpful admins move this to the member project section?

It's either gonna be for my mom and dad, or their friends who were enamored with my bus.

Thanks :D

I never pay asking price ;)

It's definitely not in the same shape as my 70, but I'm thinking Olaf was a once in a lifetime catch..

Tentative pick up date is Oct 10th, yea I know Kelleys Weekend. Plus I have tests that week. Thankfully I'll just be doing the loading. Family and others will be doing the unloading that evening.

Sunday the 4th of October I'll be going up there to try to get it running. Got a new battery and a good 34 pict from my bug. Also grabbed two decent used intake to head metal gaskets just in case. (forgot the brand new manifold boots I have)

The engine condition was told to me as follows:

Won't idle due to sucking air. Probably due to a pinched gasket somewhere.
recently rebuilt with new p/c

What I observed:
turns over when connected to heavy duty battery charger, but not enough amps to start it that way
the carb is a pict 30 or so, has an adapter plate
fuel pump looks new
009?
overall looks clean, like it has been gone through
intake boots looked fresh
belt looked good

Any tips/helpful info? This is what I'll do to begin with:

The owner said he'll be home that day to give me a hand in getting it running, so I should be able to borrow any tools from him.

I'll install the battery when I go 1st.
Then swap out the carb thats on it to my working 34 that Aaron and I took off my bug when we did the Kadron conversion.
Check the points and wire connections too.

Agney in South Amherst told me to get some ether and spray it on the boots and gaskets to see if they are the source of the leak. If that's the cause, the idle should smooth out real quick until the ether evaporates.

After that, I'm kind of at a loss.

I'm taking a few minutes away from trying to understand chem for an update.

Dad and I picked it up Saturday around 11. Got it up on the dolly and away we went. I got dropped off in Ypsi, so dad made his way home via 23 and 80/90.

Apparently the bumpy ride loosened the dizzy nut, so the timing is now off, but mom was able to get it off the trailer.

The gas pedal rod moves with some resistance when it gets slipped back into the hole on the pedal back.

Gotta pull the engine to check the seals, etc when I'm home over Thanksgiving break, plus see Aaron and Craig.

I've decided it's mine. Especially after possibly tracking down an interior from a 68 to put in it and a TENT (w/o poles.)

One of the best gifts ever

Post by blue71 »

I went down to meet John and pick up the interior he had laying around.

I wound up getting a lot of things for the westy including:

Z bed in mustard color, a few small cosmetic problems. SO42 dated 1967
Westy table
2 stainless steel sinks (now to get some measurements to make a cabinet, or find one)
cushion for jump seat in mustard
some little metal camping stool in mustard
original olive green curtains
curtain rods
some front seats
drawer for under sink
some closet doors for when I find a closet
step for under sliding door
wooden rear hinge cover thingy
pad for above engine compartment
seatbelts
cot for the front seat area

some smaller stuff that I don't remember what it is.

Now to find a clothes cabinet and jumpseat/fridge
