Welp, put in the new Bosch starter that I drove like 5 hours to get(long story).Started the bus today and let it idol for about 15 minutes.Lots of black smoke!I could'nt really work on much because of the smoke.I did manage to turn the distributer a little and it made no difference in the exhaust smoke. So I'm going to let it cool tonight and readjust the valves another day.Anyone know if all that smoke is normal after tearing down an engine?I'm guessing its something with my carbs.

idling is not so good for a fresh engine. pull your plugs and clean them ,probably pretty black or wet from trying to start for so long (lots of fuel getting in without getting burnt off)
MIGHT explain the black smoke.Try to keep it above 2500rpm if sitting,or better yet, drive it,if possible.

Also check your chokes to make sure they are opening all the way.

Stupid question, how do you check if chokes are opening all the way?I know I could probably look it up in a book but what fun would that be.

That's cool Ken I listed that like 6 or 7 pages ago.I'm going to drive for a while tonight and see if that burns the crap out.I think the carbs need to be synced up .It's the same problem I was having before.Timing is good, valves are good, compresion is definatly good.So I think all that is left is Carbs.Think it will wait till tune up day.Unless I get impatient(which I probably will)My one buddy told me heck with the dual's and go to a single carb ,but I think I would rather have the dual's.Peace!

My thaughts exactly Josh.Took my bus for a ride today about n hour and a half.Started out pretty rough! :o put put pshhhhh pshhhhhh!Lots of backfiring.I stuck it out and headed south were there are some good hills. The first hill was good size and I powered right up no problem. The second hill and so on.Came to a stop sign and when I started threw the gears it was as smooth as I thaught it should be ,sweeeeeeet.Got home after a wonderful drive and there is still a little smoke coming out ,but not very much.Oh ya and Arron you have a good ear ,the valves were at .008.I stuck a straw in #1 and it was the mark to the left.

Hey everyone, have a quick question.Sunday I changed the oil . Emptied all the oil. I took off the oil plug, the round thing below the dipstick, and the screen. Cleaned the screen and replaced the gaskets. I put 3 and half quarts of oil and the dipstick reads about a half an inch above the top line. Was oil hidding somewhere in there? I let it sit with all the stuff off for like 30 minutes while the oil drained . Should I drain some oil till it gets between the lines or just role with it since I only put in 3 and half quarts? Thanks for any imput.
