FramingSilly "There's a first time for everyone"

Post by framingsilly »

Well this is when I started,Had about five or so wrenches at this time, the idiot book and no experiance with this type of work.Had to borrow alot from my nieghbors, luckily one is a wrenchhead. But looked at an air cooled engine like it was a ufo.The engine was running ok but had under 80 pounds in all 4.Pushrod tubes leaked pretty good, and my garage stunk like gas .So I jumped right in and ive had alot of fun working on this . Havent started it yet but I'm really close. Also I've had a couple people help me along the way,Thank you.

This is when I broke the motor down and started cleaning and getting parts together. Not a hole lot of fun but had to be done.Looked at a whole lot of stuff online and figured out who would be the best company to deal with.My garage still smells like greese and cleaner.

Way to go Framingsilly, nice job.
You did your homework first by reading some manuals and asking some questions. Then started wrenchin' and getting your hands dirty. If you get stuck just start asking some questions. The nice thing about LEAKOIL, and this forum, is there is always someone around, like Aaron, who is willing to help you out. That's how we all learn and grow.

Thanks guys I'll make the pictures a little bigger if I can . I have the engine in now and spent part of the day today doin valve adjustments and trying to get my exhaust put back on . Of course it's not as easy as it was to take off.The bolts off the head don't line up exactly.I don't have heater box's and it's all one peace so I'm just going to sit back and have a couple tall ones insted of getting frustrated.Maybe try and back out one or two of the studs and put them back in once it's on.

I would check with Don from Canton on this. While I'm sure he will encourage you to put the heater boxes back on, he has a lot of recent experience with the exhaust stud issues. You can also check over on the IAC for good pancake/bay window advice...http://www.itinerant-air-cooled.com/vie ... afe46ee72e

A couple of tips on the exhaust....

You may want to drill out the stud holes on the header pipes to a much larger size. It makes it a lot easier to get things back together, especially if everything is in one piece.

Also, to help the pipes seal tightly to the exhaust ports on the heads, heat up the new copper gaskets with a propane torch until they are just glowing red and then dunk them in a can of water. This anneals the copper and makes it a lot softer so the gaskets will deform more easily as you tighten down the nuts.

Be careful - it's really easy to pull the studs right out of the heads if you tighten the nuts too much. The torque spec is 16 ft-lb and it's easy to go past that. I would advise against trying to install the studs after the exhaust pipes are in place. It is very easy to cross-thread the studs in that situation.

Heyyyy ,thanks for the tip on drilling the holes bigger and heating up the gaskets . I just found some nice heater boxes for $200 bucks , might pick those up and start getting all the peaces together to get that done right . It's a awful lot to aquire all at once . Probably won't happen till next fall but I should be OK for the camping season . Already can't what (Winter sucks). Well here is some pictures of where I'm at now . Hey Arron any time you could set some time aside would be great . Hope everyone had a great holiday, and thanks for the words ofencouragement.
