Amskeptic Visit 2007

Post by Six Volt »

Many of you have probably heard of Colin the intinernet mechanic who goes by the handle Amskeptic and drives around the country helping you (for a price) fix your bus. His website is a good source of info for bay window owners. http://www.itinerant-air-cooled.com/index.php

Anyway, Don from Canton becme pretty good friends with him and from time to time when he was on his travels he would stop and visit for a few hours. This is one of those visits at my place from back in 2007. His blue bus pictured here, was know as the "Road Warrior", but sadly it was totaled in a head on crash out west. Thankfully, he came out of it alright.

For those newer members, they're referring to the '74 orange Westy in the pictures.

Probably should have kept it, but no regrets. Each of us in LEAKOIL often have a multitude of stories about acquiring or selling buses. Sometimes we regret moves and sometimes we love what we did. It's all part of the experience. For me, I got my '59 westy restored selling that '74 to Josh. Josh then used it to get his '58. I sold the '59 to get a nice house in Athens. So for both of us that bus had PAK, "Positive Acquisition Karma."

I got the '74 bus from a guy in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It had a crazy paint scheme on it that reminded me of a Cincinnati Bengal helmet, so it had to go. The NM owner said the paint scheme was Palm trees???? :?

My brother-in-law helped me do a backyard paint job. My first foray in to body work. He did the spraying and final coats of mud. I did the sanding and gopher cleanup. Josh did a lot of improvements after he got the bus. I stupidly replaced a set of Weber 40's because they had no choke with a progressive, but Josh saved the day by installing some nice dual carbs on the 1800 engine. That bus could get up and go! That 1800 was a great runner.

It ended up in the hands of two other LEAKOILER's after Josh and last I know it was bought by a Dr. in Cincinnati. Maybe he would have liked the Bengal look!

As long as I'm in the area, I'll stop by, but I'll do so after you have your time with Colin. It's a good experience dealing with him, especially if you have a bay window. I don't want to monopolize the time you've scheduled with him. We can go get something to eat at the end of the day. Hopefully Don will see this and join in. It'll be on us.

Here are a few pics of that '74 when I got it and how the paint turned out. And yes, Josh later fixed that front passenger door dent!

And yes, Bill Weber did the front seats! :D

And here's an admission against interest. If I had to do it over again, I would have left well enough alone and kept that original paint and those stupid palm trees as they were. Live and learn.
