Hope you feel better soon. You still have at least a few months of winter to get you motor done.

Put an ad topic in the For Sale/Wanted/Trade forum. Maybe someone here can give advice or has a source for the parts you need. Doesn't hurt to start asking now. Like Bill said you still have lots of time this winter. Glad you are feeling better at least.

Thanks, Marla.
I decided to go with HAM heads and pass on an expensive vacation we were planning on this year. It probably isn't necessary, but the peace of mind is worthwhile.
Anyone want to recommend what size gun brushes/snakes I should buy for cleaning out the case oil galleries and crankshaft?
Good news for people running FI, head temp sensor 2s are now being manufactured by a Porsche vendor.

I still think you're overthinking the rebuild, but excessive caution won't hurt anything, as far as brushes for cleaning the crank cross drillings Mcmaster-Carr is the place to go they have tube brushes in a mind boggling array of material & sizes for a few bucks, and the oil galleys too, simply measure the hole and order the closest size and try it, if it's too loose or too tight then order the next size.
I'm curious how you broke the ear off you engine case, I have several cases that came to me in assembled engines with the ear broken (and glued/sealed with various compounds) and I always wondered how they get broken.
As to your oil galley plugs I would use LeakLock
http://www.highsidechem.com/leaklock.html, unbelievable product, I've used it for decades for any threaded hydraulic fitting I've had to install without any problems.

Chuck,
You're right I am probably over thinking it. But I would hate to spend all this money then cheap out somewhere and screw myself. Thanks for the tip on the brushes and the Leak Lock. That stuff looks awesome.
I broke the ear because I'm an idiot. Two reasons:
1. I missed one perimeter bolt
2. I smacked it with a rubber hammer.
I had it welded back on.
Bill,
Thanks for the size bore snake. I appreciate it. I have a .22 cleaning kit at home I forgot about.
The type 4 oil pump tang had .015" play from the factory. Mine measured at .016" according to my dial indicator. Really glad I was able to save the threads on it.

Minor victory yesterday: replaced all of my lug nuts.
A seemingly simple task that has taken me a long time to complete.
About half of the lug nuts could be removed by hosing them down with penetrating oil for a couple days then heating them til red hot and hitting them with an impact gun. The others were a bit more difficult, I even had to cut through a couple studs.
Casualties include:
3 19mm sockets
6 18mm sockets
1 19mm stripped nut remover
2 studs
1 wheel
2 breaker bars
1 socket wrench
Too many adapters to count
1 can of NAP gas
4 bottles of PB Blaster

Since I'll be getting rid of the Jetta soon, and my girlfriends parents are in desperate need of a car, I surprised her at work yesterday with her dream car, a 2017 Tiguana and we are giving her parents the Golf...

Got my heads from Bill this weekend. Thanks Bill!
That edge you mentioned grinding down is present in my original heads though?
I have ordered everything I need to finish the engine except for the brushes for cleaning out the oil galleries. I hope to begin assembly Friday/Saturday.
Having a really tough time getting the gas tank out, the filler hose coming off the tank is stuck
