Mackinaw trip

Post by dormohbile2 »

Got all the wiring fixed and today's the day! Going to Macinaw Island in upper Michigan. Going straight up through Detroit and making a stop over at my mother-in-laws tonight then making the rest of the trip tomorrow. Expect to see some rain today but the rest of the week looks good.

I'll post updates as we make the trip (iPad with 3G :-) ).

Good luck and have a good time. The Island is great, but have your wallet handy! The show at the Fort is cool.

All-
Tightening up the oil pressure switch and I moved (not only radially but vertically) the distributor and it won't start.

Anyone available to give me a call to walk me through getting it back in time?

All-
I got it with some trial and error and static timing!

Leaving as soon as the storm goes by...

Made it to findlay for dinner and have discovered that the oil pressure sender is stripped spewing oil all through the engine compartment. Plan to pull it and wrap Teflon tape around to hopefully seal it.

I recall there is a list of people who can help those in distress. Just in case, can someone send me the link? Don't think I'll need it here but maybe later...

Be careful not to tighten the sender too much or you'll crack the case and have bigger problems.

Case appears to be stripped. Have it on a flatbed going to a shop in Findlay. Plan to see if he can re- tap and put in an adaptor. How much risk?

This is the same thing that was wrong with the 71 when I picked it up in NM. The problem is that the sending units are a tapered pipe thread and people crank them down flush and they can crack the case. If yours is just stripped, then you could probably just get away with an adapter. I would just be worried about metal shavings getting in the oil journals from the guy tapping the threads. You should at least change the oil when he's done repairing the threads.

If you put some grease on the tap in addition to the cutting oil you can usually catch most of the metal particles.
