Put a bike rack on Bus 2 for camping, I unbolted the bumper and stored it, dug up some Beetle bumper brackets, cut them down, drilled the spotwelds, and welded scrap to it. Some heater hose finished it off.

Also helping Rob do brakes and an AC disc upgrade to his '66 camper.

Beautiful ride in the park today!

I was equipped head to toe in PPE when this happened- the wire wheel caught in a crevice, launched into my arm and managed to find the only flesh exposed. No pain, no bleeding, oddly, it's a bad day when you see your own fat. I think this is the worst injury I've had in the shop in 30 years so all in all, not bad. Neosporin, bandages and back to work. That's why I call this tool the "flesh remover".

Some of you know I'm helping Lee build a T4 engine at the shop for his '80 Vanagon. Here's a Cliff's Notes version of the story:

Lee had another guy helping him in Mansfield who unfortunately passed away late last year during the rebuild process, so I was the second string QB for the job. Lee had tried to get this bus running properly for years and couldn't, upon teardown he found a healthy cam marked C25 in it. Stock FI doesn't play well with wicked cams. We degreed three cams including an old stocker, new stocker, and the one marked C25. (BTW, Scat makes a C25 that doesn't match up to the specs of this cam. According to the Samba Gurus, Scat's mfg process could easily make a cam like this POS and box it as a C25) The C25 cam was about 3 or 4 steps up from a stock cam, definitely way too much lift and duration for a stock engine. If you're a cam guru, notice my notes on the paper- the base circle varied dramatically on the old stock cam and the C25 cam as well as the lift and duration. The new cam from Jorge at European was very consistent on its measurements. Also notice a stock cam has no overlap- news to me.

Anyway, we polished the crank and new cam journals, new hydraulic lifters, soda blasted the pistons and ball honed the jugs, new cast rings, took the best parts from 2 or 3 engines, new AMC heads, and put it together. Lee's son Luke also got in on the process.

Yesterday was a big day, we fired it on propane on the engine stand. It sounds great, has good oil pressure and no unusual noises. Ran it 20+ minutes at 2000+ to break in the cam, it was a good day!

Glad the propane worked! Hope he has a great running engine after all the trials and tribulations! (I can sort of relate to that! :D )
