This damn thing died when driving it a couple times. I had to turn the key off and on while going 40mph. We're guessing the wire mesh at the bottom of the gas tank is clogged with debris. I'll be checking that tonight after work in the parking lot on campus. This bug must be haunted.

Nick,

I was having the same problem with my bug a few weeks ago. Was fine at low speed but when I was at higher revs it would stall out. I had what "seemed" to be a good flow from rubber hose to the metal tube that runs through the chasis. Turns out the problem was I kinked the hose ever so sliggtly when I removed and replacEd the gas tank the previous week. Was enough to not allow enough gas to reach carb at higher RPMs, but not enough to notice when I disconnected (IE I had a good stream of fuel flowing when I disconnected). Don't know if you removed gas tank lately, but it is a good place to start the search, plus it is free and relatively easy.

Thanks Mike. In addition to that line being a bit messed up the mesh sock inside the tank was full of rust. I took care of those, now it won't idle right when warm. The electric choke is messed up and opens too much. Time to reset that tomorrow.

It's not going to the Omaha VW show tomorrow. I don't trust it to get me there with all these problems its been having after sitting for who knows how long before the lady I got it from bought it.

My time outside tonight is done. The rain forced me inside.

The choke can only open so far till it's wide open. It could be too tight and not opening up all the way? Is the car 6v or 12v? Make sure your choke element matches your battery voltage. Also if there was that much rust in the tank, you should blow out the jets to make sure they are clear. Good luck Nick!

Josh,

I've been playing with the choke setting and doing the idle adjustment procedures as per the manuals. The choke was a bit strange, tight as you said. The carb is a Solex 30-pict2 that I used to have on Olaf, but decided to rebuild it for a decoration on my coffee table. I think I have it all set now, next week I'll see about a longer trip around town to see how it handles the stop and go. It was really starved for gas because of that plugged mesh sock. The plastic fuel filter didn't have any junk in it. I'll be watching it closely to see what sort of gunk it collects.

Now I have to beg dad to find in my stuff or I from somebody the elusive 67 only wiper motor (square like an early 6V, but 12V 2 speed and 4 spade terminal wires). I took mine apart and cleaned the brush contacts inside to remove carbon buildup. When I turn the wipers on the arms move a fraction of an inch, then nothing. This was exactly how it behaved before I checked things out. All wires are connected and clean. The wiring diagram from thesamba is printed in a 4 sheet version so I can see it easily. I also worked on the armature to ensure it moved freely. One part of it was seized and then fixed.

Volkswagens came in something other than 12V? I always figured that was just Sean being funny ;)

The Omaha show was similar to last year vehicle wise, a few different variations but overall decent. I didn't take any photos though.

Spoke too soon. The choke element is broken internally, time for a new one. So that's leading to my stalling I'd imagine. Plus the fuel filter is slowly filling up with more rust after doing the sock removal. Time to get yet another fuel filter, take the fuel pump apart to clean its fuel filter, and again tear the carb apart to clean/check it for bits of crap.

Also had to bang on the starter to get it to go. So I'd imagine that's next on my list. Just a wee bit pissed off now.
