5 hours today, new total 152.

finally got some metal in, so hopefully I can get the rear section done before the snow sets in...

I plan on getting all the metal I need for the cab area over the winter, so when spring comes I can hit it hard.

anyway, todays progress

I started with the left rear corner

Image

as you can see it was pretty chewed, remarkably the tray was in decent enough shape that I just left it...

Image

couldn't say the same for the bottom of the wheel well though, so I cut the cancer out

Image

and made a new piece and welded that in

With that back in, it was time to tack up the panel. Obi Wan Kirk Nobi gave me some sagely advice about installing the Gerson corners. He said "if there is one thing I cannot stress enough its....." I forget what he said, so I decided to wing it

Image

for those astute viewers, you will notice I didn't spot weld the battery tray. I said "screw it"

Image

Image

the panel fit really well with the exception of being about 1/8" or so short

Image

I will get the long reach chisel out tomorrow and see if I can massage that a little tighter from inside the engine bay.

since I like to commune with nature in my shop (its outside on my driveway), I am kinda bound by nature. It was windy today, so I had to use flux core to set the tacks, and could only work till the sun went down.

My plan is to hook up the gas tomorrow, and finish welding and grinding the panel down. I will try to weld as much as I can from inside the bay, to try and avoid the wind.

got a little over 3 hours in today. new total 156 hours

started by finishing up the welding, then slapped a layer of 'glass on the seam

Image

let that dry, sanded, then threw on a skim of bondo

Image

then sprayed a quick coat of rattle can to protect it for the winter

Image

remember guys, its important to mask off any areas you do not want to get overspray on :o

Image

that should keep the rust at bay until late spring when I can do a proper prep job and final paint (not rattle can)

Finished result

Wow, this looks really good Mike. Keep up the good work... I was hoping to see updates on this project.

We have matching corners now.

Cut, fit, and zipped. Will tack/weld when front is at same point, to make sure everything lines up.
