Kelleys Island 2009
Re: Kelleys Island 2009
Since a lot of members seem to like the idea of towing a trailer, maybe the Club could take up a collection and buy a cart and trailer for Kelleys and other campouts, and have it as a "Communal" cart for erranding or whatever. We could paint it orange and slam an old split window nose on the front of it. Oh wait... Bob already gave that one away to Aaron.
Nevermind.

Re: Kelleys Island 2009
Does anyone know if they will charge extra for the ferry OR the 4h camp if we decide to bring our pop-up? and if we bring it, can we park it with our bus or do we have to hide it somewhere? and how much of a potluck do we bring...I just need to know how much to make. Is it true the ice will be available for free and do we need our own bucket to carry it from the ice maker or is it bagged? i know...lots of questions...i couldn't remember them all when we were at octoberfest...(hmm...cant imagine why...) so i walked away empty handed. thanks.

Expect to pay double or triple the cost on the ferry, they charge by length. Ask bill about being charged for the bikes that added length to his bus.
Re: Kelleys Island 2009
Ted is correct about Ferry rates for trailers. You may want to call the ferry co. to get and exact rate. You will be able to park it with your bus at the campout. As far as the potluck goes,it's up to you. Many bring a crockpot meal if that helps with the "how much" part of your question. You could also bring a desert type dish. We also have access to a full commercial kitchen if you are bringing something that needs to be prepared.

Re: Kelleys Island 2009
As Bill said, ONE crockpot of something, or similar quantity of non-crockpot food will be plenty. We always have a bunch of food leftover, so don't feel that you have to go hogwild on making a ton of food. Donations of hotdogs for the hotdog rolling machine are also welcome. Most times, hot dogs are available throughout the day and evening, provided that someone remembers to bring the machine. The camp has a nice big walk-in cooler that you can stash any of your perishable foods in. The ice machine is across from the cooler and you will need a bucket or something to bring ice back to your camp in. I just tote mine in a plastic grocery store bag.

I'm far from a KI expert, but pictures seem to tell the story. If you haven't been to KI for a LEAKOIL event yet, you can go back on the old 'past event' Kelleys threads on either the current or old site you'll find answers to pretty much everything. Here are a few I don't think I posted that may help...
Here's what the pot luck looks like in full swing...

Some folks get real creative with the pot luck...
Depending on the weather, the beach at the campsite can be warm and inviting, or avoidable, (but only to some!)

Old picture previously posted, but there's a fireplace in the "lodge" house that'll let you warm up if necessary. The "itsy bitsy spider" is optional...
There always seems to be an "ongoing fire" at the beach...

You can even pretend you're on a South Pacific island!

Re: Kelleys Island 2009
That IS a great picture of dinner in Full Swing! I can hear the sounds of folks chomping away on food. Ahhh! And I think that Ray & Maggie brought that cake in 2008, right?
We usually get SO many desserts & sweets contributions that we have them as leftovers with our 4H breakfast on Sunday morning IF memory serves me
I think they ring the Breakfast Bell at 8AM and breakfast goes until 9:30AM on Saturday and Sunday. So don't sleep in if you want chow in the morning. There is usually cerial available for the kids as well, as well as the 4H-provided hot breakfast foods. The coffee pot usually in operation for an hour or so afterwards too.
Oh, and dish washing & table-bussing volunteers are ALWAYS welcome. I did that the first two years when I was a Newbie.
