Looking for pop up canvas install 1971 VW camper

Post by Ron&Caroline »

I would like to find someone who installs pop up canvas for 71 bay window camper. Prefer SW Ohio but would consider other Ohio locations. Canvas is ordered from bus depot.

Regards,

any luck? I picked up a '71 westy last night - I just started pulling off the original, rotted out top and will be attempting to install a new one as soon as it arrives (monday?). You are welcome to take a peek if you are on the fence about doing it yourself. I have no idea what I'm doing, but I have a screw driver and stapler - and I'm not afraid to use them. It doesn't look too ugly.... (akron)

I have not gotten any responses. I heard about a guy in Iowa, but really don’t want to take a road trip that far.

Take the fiberglass top off. Measure centers, have a small philips head screw driver and a pneumatic staple gun.

It's not hard, just time consuming and requires an attention to detail. Some are made to the length to staple with the white plastic edge cover strips hidden, others do not. Measure heights first before installation or you'll be taking it off and redoing it.

Thank you for the suggestion. Will see what I can do. I’ve watched some videos and you are right. Getting it positioned right and tight enough will be the problem.

I’m in southwest Ohio it’s not my favorite thing to do. But I could probably help you out. I’m east of Cincinnati

R&C, I did the one on my vanagon and it seems to have shifted over the winter !. It has screws and a cover plate, not staples like yours will have. Take your time, find a garage where you can park it for a few days. The Go Westy video, I found helpful. Ms Daisy (a 78 bus with a 71 westy top) at Geneva on the lake told me that top was a pain to install. Mark the centers, maybe you can put screws in vs staples ? screws you might be able to adjust and move if need be ?? I'm thinking no professional is going to want to do it because it is too easy to get it pulling here or there or a wrinkle meaning it won't be perfect and the time involved, they can guess. Having said that, maybe Nick knows some Amish people that would be willing to try it ?
