40 HP Refresh

Post by Six Volt »

I know you guys are probably tired of my excessive posts and "blah, blah blah...", but it keeps me motivated. And more importantly, gives you someone to laugh at! :?

I've owned my little '65 Beetle for nearly 20 years. I bought it off a guy who brought it back from Fremont, California just outside S.F.. It had one original color repaint, but otherwise was pretty much unmolested. I've used it as a summer daily driver. About 15 years ago I swapped out the original 40HP for another one from another '65 that had just been rebuilt. I probably put 60,000 miles on it over the years, maybe more. Somewhere I have the mileage written down, but who knows.

When I got into buses 7 or 8 years ago everytime I'd get a bus I'd say, "Time to get rid of the Beetle". Then I'd drive the beetle for a few days and just say, "Naw". A beetle, I've found, is a nice "change up" to a bus.

In 2008 I heard some engine noises and pulled the #3/#4 valve cover. I discovered one of the pushrods (#3 intake) was "mushroomed" or crushed inside the tube at the lifter end. Bummer. I got the old one out, drained the oil, checked the screen and didn't see anything. I pondered my options, but figured I'd just put another one in, adjust the valves and cross my fingers. The beetle fired right up and ran like a champ.

This spring I've been driving the beetle with all the nice weather and I can tell something just isn't right. When I did the springtime valve adjustment I noticed there just wasn't something right with that #3 intake. The valve spring looks like it's pulling out and there's slop in that pushrod telling me it's "mushrooming" again. Time to do something.

Well, I went out earlier this week to pull the motor. Figured I'd pull the heads and take them to Richard Sedoris (Aaron's guy) in Y-town. Figured I could have it out in less than an hour. Yea right. Let me tell you, compared to an early bus with a removable apron, motor pulls on beetles are a little bit of a pain. From here on out I'm cleaning a motor before the pull. Well, at least a little cleaning. The rear seal on mine is gone so the oil leak is no fun. Wait, I'm a LEAKOILER.

Anyway, I just got it out so I'll spend the weekend tearing it down then take the heads to Rich on Monday.

Getting ready for the pull...

We are LEAKOILERS. Rear oil seal leaks and dirty engines are no fun when pulling 17mm nuts/bolts...

Engine was a p-a-i-n to get out. Seemed like it was hung up. Muffler was in the way.

Finally after removing the exhaust, out she came...

Putting them back in can be a bigger pain.

It will go quicker if you pull the air cleaner, gen pulley, fresh air tubes and fresh air tube to muffler connector pipes.

Ok, I was able to get after it a bit this afternoon. Here are the forensics. Post away with your observations.

You've got to get those beetles "way up" top drag the motor out. Kind of like how it looked up there, Aaron.

Image

Well, "looky" here... Even though this engine appears to have a functional thermostat, the previous builder wasn't taken any chances with the flaps. Wired wide upon.

Image

Since we're talking thermostats, other rookies like me may as well learn and see how a thermostat attaches. Here's the rod that runs up through the cylinder head from the thermostat. You can see it with the tin removed.

Image

Now here's where that rod goes. It slips in to this little clip unit on the fan shroud.

Image

The thermostat then controls these...

Image

Ok, the oil cooler wasn't leaking.

Image

Mismatched heads? One had the bolts for the rocker arms...

Image

The other had studs...

Image

Now the forensics...

#1 & #2 head

Image

#1 & #2 cylinder/pistions

Image

3 out of 4 top studs pulled out of the case on the #3 #4 head. Guess It'll be helicoiled at Dale's VW

Image

Here's the #3 #4 head. What do you see???

Image

I'm a little concerned about the cam followers. I call them lifters. I guess they're the same thing. Can I get them out with a magnet? I'm wondering if one of my cam lobes is worn or the lifter is worn and that's what causing my pushrod problems. Worth a try to get them out?

Image

While I'm at it I'm going to have to clean this, any suggestions?

Image

Well, I'll be off to Richard Sedoris aka RIS on the samba on Monday. Going to give him these heads and a set I got from Ken for a 36 HP. Probably have him take a look at my collection of 36 HP cranks and cams. Who knows?

The early 40 hp heads used round bosses for the rocker studs which were prone to breaking and the later ones used square bosses.

Even the 40 HP motor Kirk gave me has mismatched studs/bolts heads. But I'm very appreciative! :D

Speaking of Dr. Kirk, he showed up during the Cav's game and gave my motor a "medical" assessment. He even examined the components with a flashlight. :? Pushrods were ok. Nothing special noted about the rocker assembly. Could it be a stretched valve? We probably won't know till RIS goes through the heads next week. I asked him if I should go "all out" and split the case. He said if Josh is stepping up, "why not"?

Thanks Kirk for showing up! You saved me from my brother in law's Cav's fanaticism for 1/2 hour! :D

Also, Mrs. G thanks you for taking crap out of our garage! ;)
