This thing steers like a semi with the power steering unhooked. I really have to wrestle the wheel.

Before you go buying stuff, check all your steering components, ie drag link, steering box, tie rods and center link pin in the beam.

Also check the swing pin to make sure it's not binding or too sloppy. As Aaron said the toe-in is also important.

Steering box and tierod ends are fine. I had the draglink unhooked to center the front tires and the steering box turned very freely. The drag link ends moved without a lot of trouble. A couple weeks ago I put new rubber boots on tierod ends and more grease while I had boots off. The center pivot has a little movement up and down, but I have not had it isolated by itself. So I am down to balljoints. Ever since I bought this it has been a mother to turn the wheels wheather the steering wheel was hooked up or not. 20 years of sitting, they either set up or were not installed correctly is my current frame of thinking.

This thing even turns hard with the front end off the ground.

There's a lot of complaining over on the IAC web site http://www.itinerant-air-cooled.com about new ball joints being extremely tight. (Go to the Suspension Steering and Tires forum and search around.) The running theory is that everyone is making the replacements to the large size and they get pinched tight when pressed into an on-spec hole. The recommendation there is to nurse original ball joints as long as possible, but that's not an option for you, I guess!

Scott at German Supply was mentioned in an earlier post - I think that's a good option. Scott seems to be a very quality-conscious guy.
