Are you sure it is an electrical problem?

Often times a warm stall/no start problem is due to fuel issues.

Check your fuel pump pressure, an your float height in the carb.

I talked to Ed on the phone and suggested he post up the pics he did. I’m not sure if his parts are compatible- can he have an alternator with an operable 12v gen regulator attached to it? Can you tell if he has an internal or external alt/reg by the pictures? I told him to give us running voltage to see if it’s charging, too, as his battery is going dead.

The bus runs 20 minutes, begins to stall on turns, the stalls altogether and won’t restart until cold. I was not able to tell whether he’s losing spark, leaning out, or flooding out as it could be any of the above.

I’m pretty sure his fan blade is cracked or loose/wrong shims by the noise he has- clunking with the belt on, no clunking with the belt off, and I can feel something “not right” between the pulley in my left hand and the fan blade in my right hand. It’s not loose, but clunks. The bearings feel fine when you spin the alt.

He has several known good gens in his shed so pulling the engine and changing back to gen might be the best option. Isn’t the gen stand different between gen and alt?

That is a Motorola externally regulated alternator and the regulator he has is for a generator and will not work. Best bet is to get a bosch internally regulated alt or install a new gen and reg.

If he switches back to a gen and known good reg he should run at least a #8 wire between the D+ , #14 between DF and a #10 ground between the gen and reg.

Definitely listen to these guys' advice, Ed. They are pretty darn good at electrical stuff. Sorry I missed your message.

Probably be easier to do the one wire alternator and save the headache of the regulator like has been mentioned. There aren't any alternator regulators in my stuff, some dude bought them ALL up at the last Mansfield show I went to.

Ed,

when you were running the alternator did you have an alternator belt or a generator belt installed?
also now that you are running a generator are you also using a generator belt?

I seem to recall (vaguely) that one is bigger than the other ever so slightly, and can inadvertently be forced into use on the wrong set up.
(generator belt fits on alternator, but not correctly, if I recall, but not vice versa)

of course I could just be making all this up. Maybe somebody who knows for sure can chime in.

regardless, make sure you carry an EXTRA generator belt at all times.

hope you make it out Thursday, cant wait to see the van.

Hey Ed:

I think you have the wrong rubber snorkel from the A/C to the carb adapter, that's why it won't fit. Pics I see and one I saw at Toledo that 21 Window is selling seem longer than yours. What do you know about your snorkel? Post up a pic if you haven't figured it out yet....

Ed,
I think I spotted your bus heading east on Rt. 6 west of Vermilion around 6:00PM yesterday. Was that you? Looks sweet, can't wait to see it up close and personal the Thursday. :D
I live on the west side of Lorain so we're practically neighbors.
