3-4 slider hubs (old style-left,new Weddle 8D-309HD hub with radiused key slots-right)

Close up of original hub with small stress fracture, VW discovered this problem with the 3-4 hubs in early 094 transaxles, and changed the design sometime around 1988-89, under hard use the fractures would propagate until the hub would break, and the transaxle would be stuck in whatever gear it was in at the time of failure (3rd,4th or neutral)
