Got the bug back from Bill's this week. Unbelievable job by Bill on the interior! Also thanks to Lurch for helping with the glass install.

I'll get some pics up in the next couple days, but for now I'm researching upgrading the front brakes.

Since I know next to nothing (and readily admit it) I thought I'd ask for some input.

I've seen front disc replacement kits for early (stock height, 15" wheels, link pin front end and wide 5 bolt pattern) bugs go from $300 http://www.mamotorworkstv.com/vw/product/322467/ to $1300 http://www.mamotorworkstv.com/vw/produc ... kit-front/. I've also seen some middle of the road priced kits that have a 7/8" offset on each wheel. http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDet ... tCode=4202 With any of them, add in the replacement MC and resevoir and probably some replacement brake lines, seals and front bearings and it can get a little pricey. But my kid will probably want to drive this and today's younger generation has no concept of "proactive slow down in advance for shoe braking" so I'm going to bite the bullet.

So, the $300 kit scares me because there has to be a quality difference bwtween the higher end packages and even cheaper $239 kits :o like these http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp ... C10%2D4120. The $1300 kit is probably great, but can I get away with someting a little cheaper that will still give me an acceptable level of safety? What's the difference between 5/130 and 5/205 set ups? Is one more correct for an early stock beetle? Is the offset a real problem with stock 15" 165 radials?

Appreciate your knowledgable input.

Why do you need to upgrade the brakes? Install a dual master and call it good.

Have you driven an early Beetle? It's not a question of hydraulics, they need 3x the friction surface that they have. It's like driving with wet shoes when they're dry.

I'm with 6V, put bigger front brakes on it if the kid's driving, and bigger rears wouldn't be a bad idea either (I have a hunch that early T3 bolt on, I put them on my Ghia [4 lug] for a noticeable difference even with discs). Too bad it's KP and Ghias didn't have disc/KP.....

5x205 is early VW.

5x130 is later Poorsche bolt pattern

You don't own a Poorsche.

I know you aren't too much of a dumbas to use one of these...

Well, don't let me down anyhow
Yea, I'm not a carpenter so don't be playing that "tape measure card" on me! Believe it or not, (and yes, I know you don't believe it) I can actually read product descriptions and I know the CB kit will widen my front wheelbase by 7/8" on each side. My question is (as I'm sure you know) does anyone have practical experience with these kits to say that will cause tire rubbing or other problems that I can't learn or appreciate from the use of a tape measure? :D

Come on man, WWWFD? :D

I'd get out a tape measure and make sure I had 7/8" clearance.

Got it Bro!

Run early Type III in the rear and 66 Type I in the front. Get some high friction linings installed on the shoe tables, have them arced to the drums and all should be good.

Sean,

you need to get Fergus a late 60's full sized car with manual drums all around so he can learn anticipation braking.
