1965 Camper

Post by sehilliard1 »

Well I have been a looker for a long time but finally pulled the trigger on a Split Bus.

Thanks to Kirk for turning me on to this bus. I know that many of you have known about its existence for a long time.

It is a 1965 Panel converted to a Camper. I believe it to be a Caravelle conversion if you see something that suggests otherwise I would love to hear from you!

It had been put in a garage around 1980 and slept there in peace and quiet until last Wednesday November 19th 2014. That being said it still has its typical bus rust.

Needs:
– rockers (both sides)
–bottoms of doglegs (both sides)
– rear corner repair (both battery trays are rock solid)
– outriggers (all four)
– jack points (all four)
– nose repair
– front floor outer repair (both sides)
– A and B pillar repair
– Cargo door bottoms

Has:
– All 5 original 14" date stamped rims (7.64)
– Both original front seats (non walkthrough) with original seat covers torn on the seams
– As you can see in the photo of the drivers side where I started stripping off the primer LOTS of it not all of its original Pearl White paint !!!
– 97% of its original camper interior.
– 88k miles on odometer (who knows but could be original miles)

Mechanical:
– Has small nut transaxle (I know 64 was the last year for the small nut, any thoughts on this being the original transaxle as this was a very early 65 model year production?)
– No Motor
– Needs brakes gone through

Over the next few weeks my plan is to heat the shop and take as much of the primer off the bus as possible. It was painted green below the belt line at some point but that paint is coming off with ease. Another goal will be to get as much of the rat piss smell out of the interior as possible.

Most have recommended getting it on the road prior to starting any metal work, which I think is very wise advice.

How you can help!!!
– looking for any advice/input you may have on this project.
– help me sell my 1965 Bug to finance the project. I would be willing to pay a small bird dog fee to anyone who brings me a serious cash buyer.

Congrats. Small nut may be because it was produce as a commercial vehicle.
Check the M-code.

I like to think I helped it by removing 30 pounds of shag carpeting that was socked in rat piss. Someone must have had a limitless supply of the stuff. They covered both front door panel with it. The front seat pedestal and the entire rear floor.

Welcome to split bus ownership. Looks like you have a great project. Love the interior shots, looks a lot like the interior of our 65 Westy.
